Things to know

  • We follow all government regulations and recommendations related to the COVID-19 pandemic.

  • The food in the ranchitos is not included in the price. The food will be paid directly to the locals in their communities.

  • Lodging is also not included in the price. Each ranchito will have several options and you can decide to sleep in a tent. The price can range from $50 to $150 pesos, depending on where you choose to sleep.

  • There is no cell phone signal for most of the route (only when you are near Pinal de Amoles).

  • It is not necessary to know how to swim, but you should not be afraid to swim with a life jacket. On the fourth day of the trek (from Santa María de los Cocos to Ayutla) we will cross the Ayutla River several times.

  • This is an extremely difficult hike and you will be walking all day long for four days.

  • It is not recommended to bring a tent unless you are willing to carry one. You may want to burn it or throw it away before the end of the trip if you don't follow our advice.

  • We will not have a support vehicle. If you cannot continue the route due to injury or you are not physically able, you must pay your expenses to return to your vehicle. There are limited options for transportation in the small communities on the route.

  • There are only a few small shores along the route. Stores probably won't carry what you normally consume unless you're living on a diet of beer and crackers, so it is suggested that you bring some snacks of your liking.

  • If it is obvious that you are not physically fit enough to complete El Legendario, a guide may tell you that you cannot continue. We won't drop you off in the middle of nowhere, but we may tell you to look for transportation at one of the stops along the route. We will assist if necessary.

  • Only those who complete the entire route on their own (walking) will receive credit for completing the challenge.

  • The video at the bottom of this page is the route of the last day from Santa María de los Cocos to Ayutla. The only difference is that you will swim across the river multiple times. The part of the video with large rocks may contain deep water (highly likely).

  • El Camino Viejo reserves the right to modify the routes or itineraries at any time.

Mandatory Equipment

  • Mini first aid kit

  • Flashlight with extra batteries

  • Sleeping bag and pad

  • Medium backpack with very basic personal hygiene items and a change of clothes and money for any extra expenses you want or need to do. Consider the prices mentioned above.

  • Bottle with water or sports drink to hydrate on the journey (minimum 2 liters of water)

  • Hiking shoes or boots (don’t come with shoes you just bought)

  • Whistle

  • Waterproof/dry bags (especially for electronic equipment)

Recommended Equipment

  • Light pants, leggings, shirt. Long sleeves are suggested to avoid cuts or scratches on arms and legs.

  • Hat

  • Sunscreen

  • Repellent

  • Extra food (the amount depends on you, if you are going to consume local, do not take so much, everything counts)
