Exploring Cañón del Infiernillo: Guacamayas and Canyon Scenery

Hidden within the Sierra Gorda Biosphere Reserve, Cañón del Infiernillo is a dramatic canyon known for its steep walls, flowing water, and rich wildlife. While it is widely recognized as an excellent location for canyoning, it is also one of the best alternative places to see guacamayas in the afternoon, without the need to wake up in the middle of the night as required for a sunrise visit to Sótano del Barro.

For travelers interested in scenery, wildlife, and a less demanding schedule, Cañón del Infiernillo offers a rewarding and unique experience.

The Best Time to Visit

Cañón del Infiernillo is especially good for observing guacamayas verdes (Military Macaws) from September through the end of December, when large numbers visit the canyon to feed. These are the same guacamayas that nest and live in the Sótano del Barro, but the canyon is one of their favorite feeding areas.

Some guacamayas are year-round residents, so sightings are possible at any time of year. However, outside of the September–December window, visitors may only see a handful of birds rather than large flocks.

One of the advantages of Infiernillo is that the guacamayas often fly much closer to observers than they do at the Sótano, making this an excellent location for photography.

Guided Exploration

The trail into Cañón del Infiernillo is the best maintained of all the major trails in the Sierra Gorda, with clear paths and solid footing. That said, the route can be steep in sections, which may be challenging for visitors who are not in strong physical condition.

Along the trail, visitors reach a beautiful natural pool where swimming is possible while waiting for the guacamayas to arrive in the afternoon. Be warned—the water here is noticeably colder than at places like Los Arquitos, but refreshing nonetheless, especially on a warm day.

Canyoning Considerations

While El Camino Viejo Adventures does not offer canyoning in Cañón del Infiernillo, it is important to note that this canyon is popular for that activity. If you plan to go canyoning, be sure to choose a reputable, experienced company. Due to the technical nature of the canyon and changing water conditions, there have been several fatalities over the years, making professional guidance and proper safety standards essential.
