Río Escanela Hike to Puente de Dios: A Journey Along the River
The Río Escanela Hike to the Puente de Dios is one of the most scenic and immersive ways to experience the Sierra Gorda. This route follows the Río Escanela itself—the same river that flows directly through Puente de Dios—allowing hikers to experience the landscape gradually, from quiet riverbanks to one of the region’s most impressive natural formations.
Rather than arriving at Puente de Dios directly, this hike offers the satisfaction of reaching it on foot, following the natural course of the river through forested terrain, pools, and canyon scenery.
The Best Time to Visit
This hike can be done year-round, but the experience is especially beautiful during the rainy season and early dry season, when the river is flowing well and the surrounding vegetation is lush. During higher water levels, waterfalls appear along the canyon walls, enhancing the overall scenery.
Because much of the route follows well-established paths and river corridors, conditions are generally good even after rain, though water crossings may be required.
The Hike Experience
When combined with a visit to Puente de Dios, this route covers approximately 19 kilometers (about 12 miles). Despite the distance, the hike is considered an easy walk, thanks to good trails and minimal elevation gain. The pace is relaxed, with time to enjoy the river, stop for photos, and take breaks along the way.
The hike closely follows the Río Escanela, offering constant access to water, shaded sections, and changing perspectives of the canyon. Reaching Puente de Dios at the end of the hike feels especially rewarding after having followed the river all the way to its dramatic conclusion.
Guided Exploration
While the trail itself is straightforward, a guided hike adds valuable context about the river system, local ecology, and the geological forces that shaped Puente de Dios. Guides also help manage timing, water crossings, and access to the site, which requires a local guide for entry.
This hike is well suited for hikers who enjoy longer days on the trail without technical difficulty.
Flexible Itinerary Options
The Río Escanela Hike to Puente de Dios works well as a stand-alone full-day hike, combining distance, scenery, and a tour of Puente de Dios into one complete experience. It can also be easily combined with one additional destination in the Sierra Gorda—such as a viewpoint, waterfall, or town visit—depending on your interests and available time.
