Exploring the Sótano del Barro: Home of the Guacamayas
Hidden deep within the Sierra Gorda Biosphere Reserve, the Sótano del Barro is one of the most dramatic natural formations in the region and one of the best places in Mexico to observe guacamayas verdes (Military Macaws) in the wild. This massive open sinkhole drops hundreds of meters into the earth and serves as a nesting and resting site for these iconic birds, offering a truly unforgettable wildlife experience.
Reaching the Sótano del Barro is an adventure in itself and is best suited for travelers seeking a challenging and rewarding outing in a remote part of the Sierra Gorda.
The Best Time to Visit
The best time to see the guacamayas at the Sótano del Barro is at sunrise, when the birds leave the depths of the sinkhole in large, swirling groups to begin their day feeding in the surrounding countryside. Because of this early schedule, most visitors must start hiking well before dawn.
The hike to the rim of the sinkhole is very demanding and takes approximately 2 hours, much of it uphill. For this reason, it is highly recommended to stay in or near Santa María de los Cocos, the closest community to the trailhead. If you stay farther away, it can be difficult to find a tour operator or local guide willing to depart at 1–2 a.m. to make the sunrise viewing possible.
Guacamayas can also be seen in the late afternoon, when they return to the Sótano after a day of feeding. While sunrise offers the most dramatic spectacle, afternoon visits are a good option for those unable to hike in the dark.
Guided Exploration
A local guide is required to visit the Sótano del Barro, both for safety and to protect this sensitive habitat. The trail is steep, rugged, and physically demanding, making good fitness, sturdy footwear, and plenty of water essential.
For visitors who may have difficulty with the climb, burros or horses can be rented from local guides to assist with the ascent. This service must be arranged in advance, so it’s important to communicate any mobility concerns ahead of time.
Weather conditions, especially during the rainy season, can significantly affect trail conditions, making experienced local guidance especially important.
Alternative Guacamaya Viewing Options
Another excellent option for seeing guacamayas is Cañón del Infiernillo, where the birds can often be observed flying through the canyon in the afternoon. This is a particularly good alternative from September through late December. Outside of this period, however, Sótano del Barro remains the most reliable and impressive location for observing guacamayas year-round.
A Perfect Add-On: Los Arquitos, Ayutla
After the demanding hike to the Sótano del Barro, a refreshing stop at Los Arquitos in Ayutla makes an excellent addition to the day. This popular swimming hole features clear water and natural rock formations—an ideal way to cool off and relax after a challenging mountain hike.
