I'm Derek Larson, a retired US Army scout with a passion for exploration that has taken me from the sands of Iraq and Afghanistan to the picturesque landscapes of the Sierra Gorda in Mexico. It's been quite a journey, and today, I'm thrilled to share with you the next chapter in my life.
After proudly serving in Operations Desert Storm and Enduring Freedom, I found myself at a crossroads. The call of adventure was still strong within me, but this time, it wasn't about military missions; it was about discovering the hidden gems of the world with my family by my side.
A few years as a defense contractor allowed me to transition from the rigors of active duty to civilian life. However, the allure of the unknown beckoned, and so my family and I decided to make a bold move. We packed our bags, crossed borders, and found ourselves in the heart of Mexico, specifically in the charming town of Jalpan de Serra, nestled in the Sierra Gorda.
Why the Sierra Gorda, you ask? Well, it happens to be the native country of my incredible wife, and together, we embarked on a new adventure – one that involved not just exploring the rich culture and breathtaking landscapes but also sharing these experiences with others. Thus, El Camino Viejo Adventures was born.
Our tour and hiking business is more than just a way to make a living; it's a reflection of our love for the outdoors, cultural exchange, and the thrill of discovery. The Sierra Gorda, with its rugged mountains, lush forests, and historic trails, provides the perfect backdrop for the kind of experiences we wanted to offer.
