El Camino del Pame (Xi úi): Our Most Popular Multi-Day Hike in the Sierra Gorda

El Camino del Pame (Xi úi) follows ancient routes that have been used for centuries by the indigenous people of the Sierra Gorda. This hike is more than a physical journey—it is an immersion into remote landscapes, living culture, and one of the most beautiful river corridors in the region. It is our most popular hike, offering a rare balance of adventure, history, and flexibility.

Pame vs. Xi-ui: Understanding the Name

The people commonly known as the Pame refer to themselves as Xi-ui, which means “the people.” “Pame” is the name most widely used in Spanish and in historical records, while Xi-ui is their own name and identity. We keep the name El Camino del Pame because it is the term most visitors recognize, while acknowledging and respecting the fact that the people who live along this route identify as Xi-ui.

Hike Options: 1 to 4 Days

El Camino del Pame can be completed in 1 to 4 days, depending on your time, fitness level, and desired pace.

1-Day Option
The one-day version is long and physically demanding and is recommended only for hikers in excellent physical condition. It’s a challenging full-day effort, but extremely rewarding for those prepared for it.

2- to 4-Day Options
The multi-day options allow the route to be modified to match your abilities, creating a more relaxed and immersive experience. These versions are ideal for enjoying the landscape, river time, and cultural aspects of the hike without rushing.

Lodging and Meals

Depending on the route and your preference, we can either camp or stay in the homes of Pame (Xi-ui) families. When staying with local families, hosts can also prepare traditional meals, adding an authentic cultural experience to the journey and supporting the local communities who live along the route.

The Río Santa María Experience

A highlight of El Camino del Pame is the Río Santa María, known for its striking turquoise color. On many sections of the hike, we walk alongside the river, swim in it, or even float downstream. Thanks to its spring-fed waters, the river is comfortable enough to enjoy even during the coldest months of the year.

The river provides natural breaks during long hiking days and is a key reason this route is so memorable.

Guided Exploration

This hike passes through remote and sparsely traveled terrain, making a guided experience essential. Local knowledge ensures safe river crossings, proper route selection, and respectful interaction with local communities. Guides also provide insight into the history, culture, and natural environment of the Sierra Gorda.
