Sótano de las Golondrinas
Hidden in the lush mountains of San Luis Potosí, the Sótano de las Golondrinas is one of the most spectacular natural formations in the world. This massive open sinkhole drops vertically into the earth and is famous for the daily flight of thousands of birds that spiral in and out of its depths. Visiting the Sótano is a powerful experience—one that combines geology, wildlife, and a sense of scale that is difficult to grasp until you stand at the edge.
Cascada de Tamul
The Cascada de Tamul is one of the most iconic natural attractions in Mexico and the dramatic finale of the Río Santa María. Located in the heart of the Huasteca Potosina, this waterfall is the tallest in the state of San Luis Potosí, plunging powerfully into a deep canyon where turquoise waters meet towering limestone walls. It’s a place defined by scale, sound, and raw energy—and an essential stop for anyone exploring the region.
Hiking the Río Santa María
The Río Santa María is one of the most powerful and beautiful rivers in central Mexico. From its birth in the mountains of San Luis Potosí to the point where its name disappears at the Cascada de Tamul in the Huasteca Potosina, the river carves deep canyons, feeds remote communities, and creates some of the most challenging and rewarding routes in the Sierra Gorda.
Along its entire course, it would be hard to find someone who knows this river better. Our hikes and canyon routes follow the Río Santa María through its wildest sections, offering experiences that range from challenging day hikes to multi-day expeditions deep in remote canyon country.
El Camino del Pame
The El Camino del Pame hike follows an ancient route once used by the Pame people and is our most popular hiking experience. This historic trail winds through remote terrain, blending cultural heritage with the natural beauty of the Sierra Gorda. One of the highlights of the route is the Río Santa María, famous for its striking turquoise waters created by mineral-rich springs and limestone riverbeds. Along the way, hikers encounter diverse ecosystems and meaningful landscapes, making this an ideal hike for those seeking both scenery and history.
